Is Freemasonry a religion?
No, it is not. Freemasonry is certainly not a religion by primary definition of the term, nor it has any pretensions to become one.
Is Freemasonry engaged in political affairs?
No. Actually, any kind of political discussion is not allowed in masonic lodges.
Is Freemasonry a worldwide association?
Yes, Freemasonry works around the whole world, with the exception of some countries where it has been prohibited (i.e. North Korea, Iran, Vatican).
There is no international supreme governing body, each Grand Lodge is independent and sovereign within its territorial jurisdiction.
Is Freemasonry a secret society?
No. As Benjamin Franklin, a Freemason himself, once said „Biggest secret of Freemasonry is the fact that there is no secret.“
However, workshops and meetings of Lodges are discreet and open only to members.
Why does Freemasonry refer to God as the Great Architect?
Freemasons have different religious beliefs, there are members who are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu etc. We use the term Great Architect in order to prevent discord. Great Architect is not a replacement for God, nor it represents Masonic God or the combination of all Gods in one.
Why do Freemasons wear insignia?
While performing their Rituals, Freemasons wear insignia out of symbolic and historical reasons. Insignia is a kind of uniform which signifies hierarchical order in the organization.
Who can become a Freemason?
Any moral and ethical person, with a good reputation, can become a Freemason. As one common phrase goes – “A person who has made a good name for themselves”.
Can women become Freemasons?
Yes, all around the world there are more and more mixed Grand Lodges which welcome both men and women. These Grand Lodges are part of so called modern, liberal tide of Freemasonry.
Do Freemasons accept people of religious beliefs other than Christian?
Yes. Liberal Freemasonry does not intermeddle in the religious beliefs of its members at all. However, religious debates are not allowed at masonic workshops and meetings to avoid unavailing arguments.
How big are the financial expenses of membership in Freemasonry?
Traditionally, there is an initiation fee – fee for entering the order. Also, membership fee is mandatory and varies across different lodges. Freemasons are called upon to be generous and donate to charity organizations, but it exclusively depends on each individual member, how much he or she is willing and able to contribute.
